The visit was attended by Buddhist monks and laymen as well as representatives of the local Catholic Church. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the historical meeting between the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch of Thailand and Pope Paul VI.

The Holy Father thanked the guests for strengthening friendly dialogue and mutual cooperation and shared fond memories of his visit to their country in November 2019.

The Bishop of Rome noted with regret that now «on all sides we hear the cries of a wounded humanity and a torn Earth. Jesus and the Buddha understood the need to overcome the selfishness that breeds conflict and violence, so today we need to «guide our faithful to a brighter perception of the truth that we are all brothers and sisters.» We must work together to «encourage compassion and hospitality for all people, especially the poor and the excluded.

Pope Francis thanked Thai Buddhists for deepening dialogue and cooperation with the Catholic Church and expressed warm wishes for the upcoming interfaith conference to be held at the Pontifical Urbania University on «Friendship between Buddhists and Christians for a Culture of Encounter.»
